Sesc Pavillion at Book Biennial

Sesc Pavillion at Book Biennial

1/21

SESC’s 2012 pavilion for the Book Fair is essentially an open plaza, bounded by two blocks. A larger, service module houses a reception room, meeting room, cashier, service counter, staff support, and equipment room. The second block configures a limit for the pavilion, as a bulkhead for diverse activities, it has two large rotating panels that can conform a more defined space for events and other activities programmed for the Biennial. The idea is to enhance these activities by making them visible and easily accessible. Books, records and films will be exhibited in the center of the pavilion with very fluid circulation spaces around it. The plaza has a flexible character, delimited from the support block, which opens forming the plaza with a support capable of accommodating sixty seated spectators with sound and video installations that support lectures and debates in this open environment. The entire lighting system (general and directed), will be made from parallel and transversal poles to the direction of the pavilion, aiming for greater efficiency and flexibility.

The pavilion was projected, considering its temporary character, with reusable and recyclable materials, reflecting the need for a sustainable architecture and capable of sensitizing the public to this issue in its own construction. The pavilion’s construction base is OSB, a material made from reforested wood and easily recyclable. The translucent closures will be made with 40mm thick alveolar polycarbonate panels, a material that can be fully reused. The association of these two materials, with their peculiar colors and textures, will certainly give a new identity to the SESC pavilion.
