“Rationalism is the most radical production of Fantasy.” This phrase by Sergio Camargo, from his book Preciosas Coisas Vãs Fundamentais (2010), reveals essential traits of his work—traits that, in part, make him one of the most original Brazilian sculptors within the constructive tradition. From November 28, Itaú Cultural presents the exhibition Sergio Camargo: Light and Matter.
Curated by Paulo Sergio Duarte and Cauê Alves, the exhibition brings together over one hundred works in which geometric precision and unpredictability coexist. Spanning three floors of the institute, it provides a comprehensive overview of the Rio‑de‑Janeiro-born sculptor’s career.
After beginning with figurative sculptures, Camargo developed in the 1960s his first relief series—mostly using wooden cylinders. A decade later, his production crystallized in marble—the material with which he created the majority of his pieces.¹
