Sesc Parque Dom Pedro II is the result of an urban plan developed in collaboration with a multidisciplinary team in 2011. The Dom Pedro II Park is located in the historic center of São Paulo, on the banks of the Tamanduateí River—now canalized and polluted—in an area that was violently transformed by massive roadworks carried out in the early 1970s during the military dictatorship.
Sesc is an institution dedicated to promoting education, leisure, culture, and sports, with a strong social commitment. This mission reaffirmed the project’s central premise: the building’s open and direct relationship with the city, fostering connections with its immediate surroundings. The design brings the park’s century-old vegetation into the building’s external area and into an internal green courtyard, which ensures environmental quality for the complex and enables multiple relationships with its programs: theater, cafeteria, workshops, restaurant, sports court and more.
The building’s staggered volume creates generously vegetated terraces on various levels, forming belvederes that offer wide views over the city.
In this context, Sesc Parque D. Pedro II will serve as an important element of urban and social integration, offering public spaces for social interaction, free cultural and sports activities — a significant initiative that paves the way for a positive urban transformation (from environmental, educational, and social perspectives) of São Paulo’s historic center.
